How to Keep Skin Healthy and Looking Young

When you’re in your 20’s you don’t always think about how your skin might look in ten years. Then you notice your first fine line or dark spot, and you start worrying about pore size, brightness, and elasticity.

That said, there are certain self-care steps that you can take to optimize your skin wellness and age even more gracefully. Taking care of yourself is beautiful. Aging is beautiful!

Here are some basic skincare tips and reminders, so you can keep your skin healthy and looking young.

The first thing to remember for skincare is hydration - which means remembering to drink lots of water. We’ve all heard it a million times, but it never hurts to hear again. Water is essential for aging skin because it helps to keep it hydrated. This can help with dryness and keeps skin looking dewy and clear.

Your skin is your largest organ, and what you eat and put in your body affects your organs tremendously. Along with water, you need fruits and vegetables, especially those leafy greens, to get the vitamins and minerals your skin craves. Combine these two steps with a good night’s sleep, and you are on your way to healthier skin.

Stress can also have a big impact on our skin and may even be the reason you might notice more breakouts and wrinkles. Finding ways to manage and cope with stress can be beneficial for both your skin and overall health. Activities such as yoga and meditation have many benefits including helping to reduce stress levels.

Besides drinking lots of water, eating healthy, and getting plenty of sleep, certain elements of skincare go beyond our basic understanding of healthy behavior. It's also helpful to understand signs of aging so you know how to treat what you are seeing.

Signs of aging

As we age, we lose sweat and oil glands producing sebum, leaving our skin dryer than we remember. On top of dryness, our skin becomes thinner and less elastic. Wrinkles, fine lines, and skin tags are also common. Your skin may begin to bruise easier and take longer to heal. Skin aging is inevitable, but there are things you can do to keep your skin healthy and obtain a more youthful appearance.

Apply sunscreen with SPF religiously

July is officially UV Awareness Month, and as it comes to an end, what a better time to talk about SPF.

Hands down the most important thing you can do for your skin is to apply SPF. Not just when you’re at the beach or laying out by a pool, but every single day - rain or shine. UV rays can penetrate your skin on the cloudiest of days, and sun damage is one of the hardest things to reverse. Be obsessed with UV rays and SPF! Protect your skin with a base of a broad-spectrum sunscreen that contains SPF 30 (or higher!) before applying your makeup. Don't be afraid to reapply throughout the day!

It's also a good idea to schedule regular check-ups with a dermatologist, especially if you're prone to freckles or moles.

Know what ingredients your skin craves

Certain holistic ingredients can drastically help your skin and you don’t have to spend a fortune on products that may or may not work. If you have a basic understanding of key ingredients that enhance your skin’s brightness, tightness, and clarity, then not only can you start to incorporate these foods into your diet, but you will know what to look for in your beauty products.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a key ingredient when it comes to skincare. It is beneficial for aging skin thanks to its antioxidant effects. This powerhouse ingredient can help to combat free radicals and support against oxidative stress. Vitamin C is also often found in skin brightening products, as it is known to help with dark circles and sun spots.

Vitamin C serums have gained popularity over the years because of the incredible results users have reported. These serums are for all types of skin and may help reduce visible signs of aging such as lessening the appearance of sagging skin.

Beauty Lux's CC Serum combines vitamin C, citrus stem cells and hyaluronic acid. Together these ingredients are known to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, brighten skin tone and enhance your complexion to achieve that youthful, dewy glow we all desire.

Research shows that vitamin C is essential for maintaining skin health. It may promote collagen and antioxidant levels, help form new skin cells, and again, support sunned skin!

“Vitamin C is best known for its ability to neutralize free radicals and improve aging skin,” says Joel Schlessinger, MD.

Omega-3

Omega-3 fatty acids, also known as fish oil, are a type of fat found in foods like walnuts and fish. They are known for supporting brain and heart health, but they also benefit your skin, hair, and nails!

According to researchers, a diet high in omega-3 fats or taking a fish oil pill daily, may help with skin issues such as acne, itchy or dry skin, and may even help to support skin that has undergone some sun damage.

Aloe

If you do find yourself sunburnt, we all know aloe is the answer. Aloe vera is a popular herbal remedy that can aid in soothing irritated skin and is probably most commonly used to calm the skin after sunburn. Aloe may also help alleviate skin discomfort caused by dryness, acne, or itchiness.

 Consider an anti-aging cream

Skin cells need a boost every now and then. Anti-aging products are often found in the form of a daily moisturizer containing key elements that help promote more youthful skin. Retinoids are the most common added ingredient in anti-aging products. Retinoids are vitamin A compounds that are widely used for plumping skin to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Anti-aging creams and serums also often contain other potent vitamins such as vitamin E and B vitamins, especially vitamins B3, B5, and B6 thanks to their nourishing properties.

Wash your face daily

These days it’s rare to leave the house without applying some form of makeup. And even if you use the cleanest products on the market, it is essential to wash your face before bed. Leaving product on your face overnight will cause build-up and increase pore size.

Try an overnight product

What’s better than going to sleep and waking up feeling refreshed? You can apply face masks, creams, and serums to work overnight, so you wake up feeling refreshed!

Simply apply the product at night, after your normal skin care routine, and leave it on as you drift off to sleep. Eight hours later, you wake up with your skin feeling great. Obviously, products come in many different shapes and sizes. Find what works best for your skin type.
